Writing

Editing

  • Proofreading ― Checking pages for typographical and formatting errors.
  • Copyediting ― Reviewing grammar, spelling, punctuation, capitalization, syntax and usage. Also checking for clarity and a consistent format and style (e.g., Associated Press, Chicago Manual of Style, client guide)
  • Substantive editing ― Rewriting copy and reordering paragraphs to improve flow and clarity, and editing copy to remove passive voice constructions, awkward transitions, ambiguity and wordiness

Desktop publishing

Designing visual materials to sell products or services or to inform staff members or customers

Web site maintenance/updates

  • Following a schedule for regular updates, including checking for broken links, stale dates, old copy or typos

Rates

The rate structure is as follows:

  • Proofreading and editing: $35/hour

  • Desktop publishing (without writing): $35/hour

  • Web site maintenance: $35/hour

  • Writing/rewriting: $50/hour

  • Desktop publishing (with writing): $50/hour

  • Web site updates: $50/hour

Editing speed ranges from 2 to 10 pages (500 to 2500 words) per hour, depending on the level of edit and complexity of the project.

A 25 percent surcharge applies for express projects.
